The Indian State of Andhra Pradesh has given the green light to a big state broadband network costing $90 million designed to transfer data between the state's capital and its 23 districts at a speed of 10Gbps.

A consortium of six companies will build a new broadband network in Andhra Pradesh state, over the next two years. It will link more than 40,000 government offices.Andhra Pradesh's capital, is Hyderabad, which is a hive of outsourcing companies and foreign IT companies including Microsoft who has a research centre there.

The big idea is that not only will government offices be able to use the connection, but people living in the area will be able to get an internet connection at a lower price. The consortium will be led by Aksh Broadband - a fiber optic manufacturing outfit based in Gurgaon, a place just outside Delhi famous for its temple of Shani (Saturn)
