Vodafone Japan to Launch Chip-embedded Mobile Handset

Japan-based mobile phone operator Vodafone K.K. has said that it will team up with smart-card chip development company FeliCa Networks Inc to introduce and promote the use of IC card technology in mobile handsets.
Vodafone said that it is aiming to introduce mobile phone handsets with IC chips in Japan by October 2005, and to ship up to 1m handsets at an early stage. FeliCa Networks was founded by technology company Sony and Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to license and develop smart card chips for mobile phones, using Sony's smart-card technology.
