Yahoo to boost free storage space, security
Contributed by: SHA, at 3/23/2005 10:49:00 AM.

Ratcheting up the stakes in its battle with Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and other players in the on-line search and Web services industry, Yahoo Inc. plans to announce Wednesday that it will quadruple the amount of free storage space for users of its popular Web-based e-mail service.
Beginning next month, Yahoo plans to provide up to one gigabyte of space for its members, in addition to an expanded suite of security tools that will include virus scanning and cleaning from Symantec Corp.'s Norton products.
The move follows growing competition among on-line communities to attract and keep members on their websites for longer periods of time.
As the use of digital cameras and MP3 music players proliferates, consumers are looking for improved ways to organize and store their expanding digital content. Yahoo, Google, Microsoft's MSN service and others are rushing to offer new free services, such as photo-sharing sites, to sign up more members.
