HP changes name of Linux unit to include open source
Contributed by: SHA, at 4/24/2005 01:10:00 PM.

HP has changed the name of its Linux operation to the Open Source & Linux Organization (OSLO) to advertise its open source sympathies, it said. It's supposed to signify HP's focus on open source beyond the Linux operating system. Martin Fink will continue to run the unit.
HP claims it's the "only major vendor with a complete, comprehensive open source strategy for enterprise customers," citing the 300 products it's gotten certified and integrated with open source components, including HP System Insight Manager server management software; its expanded base of 2,500 Linux and open source developers; the 100 lower-level Linux developers who work for it -- it says it tries to hire only people who are within reach of Linus Torvalds' inner circle; the 50 open source software projects it's started; the 300 open source printer drivers it's put out; its 35 Response Centers for Open Source in 34 countries and the 80 Customer Education Centers it's got doing Linux and open source training worldwide.
